My mom called me today like "hey you got mail at our house from your bank on Jan 19 about an insufficient funds notice wtf"

So I looked at my online account & yep! There on Jan 19 was a check cashed for $2000 (written on the check as twoo thosand) to an M. Spice for "School" with a signature that is NOT mine. Then, on Jan 22 the money was put back & I was charged an overdraft fee (of $35???? come on). The check submission of course had an image attached for the receipt and the whole thing was changed and the "back image" was just the front image mirrored. I have no idea how it made it into the system to be actually taken out of my account.

The check was one that got lost in the mail made out to my rental company. So idk how this Spice person got it if they're stealing mail or what, but it didn't work out for them. The whole thing is so wild.

Lucky I'm poor and the overdraft happened bc other than that my bank did not notify me AT ALL other than to tell me I overdrafted. no call to be like "hey this is a big transfer we wanted to check about it" even though any time i ever spend money out of state they freak out and lock down my account. They used to call me every time I spent money on the playstation store to make sure it was really me. This one was fine though.

So now some random person has my bank account information and of course also my address, though I don't think they'll do anything with it. Or that they could considering it's a big-ish apartment building.

Anyway the bank suggested I close than account and open a fresh one which can of course only be done in person, and it's a small bank from my hometown & the closest branch is 40 mins away. and of course banks also only operate during weekday work hours, bc that all makes sense. Maybe Monday I can get out there and do it, and I have a whole list of questions about how this check made it past any verification with the back image not being the back of the check and also it saying TWOO THOSAND and they were just like, sounds legit I guess.

At least they did refund the overdraft fee
